Kingswood have traded riffs for reveries in their surprising new single Golden, our second lick of their forthcoming album, After Hours, Close To Dawn.
Unlike the new disc’s flagship tune Creepin (which charted at #48 in the triple j Hottest 100 of 2016, FYI) this fresh offering is light on the rock but heavy on the soul, swapping out the band’s trademark chunky distorted guitar lines for a plodding organ, twinkling vibraphone, cheeky horns and feather-light drums.
The down-tempo blues hymn definitely shows a different side of the Melbourne riff-slingers, but the internet seems to be loving it already, with the vast majority of the feedback currently flooding social media coming from punters who reckon they’ve been instantly won over:
?Was hooked from the openin bass line & the beautiful deep vocals paired w that falsetto! Really smooth &silky! @KINGSWOODBAND @triplejlinda https://t.co/viR7HjkZCu

As it happens, the Kingsweigians have also just dropped a fresh music video for the new track, which stars Aussie Olympic diver Brittany O’Brien.
Speaking about the clip, which was shot at Parramatta’s Historic War Memorial Swimming Centre, guitarist Alex Laska tells triple J that the Rio contender’s high-diving antics are a metaphor that “reflects the idea of a lonesome high”.
“I’ve often thought diving must be so exhilarating / euphoric but only really enjoyed by the few who pursue it,” he says. “In a way, it reflects that ideas behind the song by representing elements of that feeling only you are left with after a specific emotional experience.”
Check out the video for the new tune below, and ICYMI you can also catch Kingswood live when they set off on a huge album trek round the country this March and April.
