Kylie Minogue has added yet another accolade to her career with a new commemorative star unveiled over the weekend in Melbourne Park. The star is located out front of the Rod Laver Arena, next to a statue of her late friend and business partner Michael Gudinski, and was put in place to celebrate 35 years since Minogue first performed at the venue – as well as her three sold-out shows on her current Tension national tour. With those shows now completed, this brings her total performances at the venue to a whopping 33 since her 1990 debut.
John Harnden, the CEO of Melbourne Park, praised Minogue in a brief statement during the unveiling, which took place on Saturday (February 22nd) in front of her friends and family. “Kylie has a longstanding and record-breaking association with Melbourne Park,” he said, “and it’s only fitting we celebrate her amazing legacy with this star – cementing her name in the history of this great destination for live events.”

Minogue, for her part, said that it “seems appropriate” that Gudinski would be “watching over” her new star – given the pair’s long history, with his company Frontier promoting every tour Minogue has ever done in Australia. “It’s hard to believe it’s been 35 years since I first stepped on stage at this venue,” she said. “I’m honoured to be acknowledged in this way in my hometown of Melbourne. I’m incredibly thankful to all the fans that have attended my shows over the years.”
The unveiling of Minogue’s commemorative star has also lead to further political discussion surrounding her bronze statue – which was once erected in Melbourne’s Docklands, but was placed in storage circa 2016 in order to clear the path for a new block of apartments. The Age reports that Nick Reece, the Lord Mayor of Melbourne, has pushed for Minogue’s statue to once again return to the public eye in a press conference given last Thursday (February 20th). “I think she’s a brilliant performer and entertainer, who has brought so much joy to so many Melburnians,” he said.
“We [also] have a real defecit of statues of great women in Melbourne. If we could get a statue of Kylie up again, it will remind all the boys and girls of Melbourne that great Melburnians come in all shapes, sizes and genders.”
Minogue’s Tension tour continues on to the Brisbane Entertainment Centre for two shows this week before setting up shop at Sydney’s Qudos Bank Arena for three sold-out shows running from Saturday, March 1st.
