Meet Coconut Cream, The First Band Signed To Ex-Gang Of Youths Member Joji Malani’s Label

Ever since beloved Gang Of Youths guitarist Joji Malani left the band in 2019, fans have been clamouring to find out what he’s been up to. Well, turns out he’s launched his own record label – Broth Records – and today his first signing have released their new song.

The signing is Sydney four piece Coconut Cream, and their new song ‘Your Drug On Computers’ is an absolute melter. We’re talking hazy indie pop that was meant for the Splendour ampitheatre. If you’re a fan of Ruby Fields or Middle Kids, this is a band for you.

Speaking of Middle Kids, MK’s Tim Fitz actually produced the track, and has produced the band’s entire forthcoming EP, set for release later this year.

But that’s not the only connection the song has to a beloved Australian band. The “your drug” referenced in the chorus is in itself a sneaky reference to a song of the same title by gone-too-soon band Saskwatch, who split up in 2019.

“It’s kind of like a journal of all the places that me and this person used to go to together and things we did which all really shaped my teenage years,” Coconut Cream’s Astari Mudana said of the song.

“‘Your Drug’ is actually the name of a Saskwatch song that I listened to a lot with someone when I was around 17. Whenever I hear the song now it takes me back to significant moments when I was younger so it’s still very sentimental to me.”

Speaking about the band, Malani explained how he discovered them.

“I tried Bumble for a few weeks and matched with this lady who asked what kind of music I was into,” he said.

“She said I should check out this band called Coconut Cream so I listened to them and thought they were really cool, and saw them play later that evening. I approached them afterward and I went to write back to this lady – she’d unmatched me!”
