Though fans may know her for album cuts like Buzzcut Season and White Teeth Teens, Lorde‘s wider notoriety has largely been propelled by one infectious track that speaks of Cristal, Maybachs, and timepieces, and now the singer has come face to face with the muse behind her hit Royals.
Though it may come as a surprise, that muse is Kansas City Royals’ Hall of Fame third baseman (as in baseball) George Brett, whose photo in an old National Geographic magazine, which showed the Major League veteran signing baseballs, gave the New Zealand songstress the idea for her track.
As the Washington Post reports, Lorde, real name Ella Yelich-O’Connor, told VH1 last year that she saw a photo “of this dude just signing baseballs. He was a baseball player and his shirt said, ‘Royals.’ It was just that word. It’s really cool.” Though the two had never met until this week.
Though scheduling conflicts kept the two apart, Brett did send her an autographed jersey on which he wrote, “Lorde, you are Royal to me.” According to the Sydney Morning Herald, the two reportedly met before her Las Vegas concert earlier this week, with her reps arranging the meeting.
