Lorde is fired up over the idea that her new sound has been defined by producer, Jack Antonoff.
In a fresh chat with the New York Times, the alt-pop queen delves into the relationship between artist and producer, expressing frustrations over being lumped into what she jokingly refers to as his “stable” of female artists.
As well as producing hit records for the likes of Taylor Swift, Lana Del Rey and Clairo, The Bleachers singer also famously produced Lorde’s monster 2017 album Melodrama, as well as her forthcoming record, Solar Power. But, as she points out in the interview, that doesn’t mean the LP is defined by him.
“I haven’t made a Jack Antonoff record. I’ve made a Lorde record and he’s helped me make it and very much deferred to me on production and arrangement,” she said. “Jack would agree with this. To give him that amount of credit is frankly insulting”.
She’s also slammed the man-behind-the-successful-woman narrative as “retro” and “sexist”.
“I know that there are certain hallmarks of what Jack does and some of those things I really love and some of them I don’t like,” she added. “And I beat them out of the work that we do together.
“I say this with so much love and affection, but I feel like we’re doing up a house together and he’s like, ‘Look at this serviette that I fashioned into the shape of two swans! Look at this set of woven baskets!’ And I’m like, ‘Great — one per room’.”
Solar Power is set to reach our ears this Friday. So far, we’ve heard title track, as well as recent follow-up ‘Stoned At The Nail Salon’.
