Melbourne’s Beloved Stay Gold Is Closing This June

Beloved Melbourne live room Stay Gold has confirmed it will close its doors this June, bringing an end to one of Brunswick’s most important live hubs for alternative and heavy music.

After opening in 2018, Stay Gold quickly became more than just another venue, it was a genuine stepping stone. The kind of room where bands played their first proper shows, figured things out, built a crowd… and then came back bigger. Not quite DIY, not quite arena – but pretty essential to everything in between.

“It’s time for us to say: thanks for the memories”

In a statement to fans, the venue shared that its lease at 133 Sydney Road will come to an end on Sunday, June 21, 2026, marking its final night. “It’s time for us to say: thanks for the memories,” they wrote, a simple line that’s already hitting pretty hard across the scene.

No further details have been given as to why the venue won’t continue beyond the lease, but its closure adds to a growing list of Aussie rooms disappearing under the weight of rising costs and shifting conditions.

And that’s the real gut-punch here… places like Stay Gold don’t just host gigs. They build scenes. They’re where bands cut their teeth, where communities form, where something small starts turning into something real. Lose too many of those, and the whole ecosystem starts to wobble.

Before it all wraps up, Stay Gold will host a final run of shows leading into June, culminating in a closing event titled “Stay Gold: To The End” on June 20, headlined by scene stalwarts Ocean Grove, Future Static and more acts TBA.

So ifyou’ve ever sweated it out in that room, discovered a new favourite band there, or just found your people in the crowd – this one’s for you.

Go give her the send-off she deserves.
