Netflix have announced a reboot of iconic Australian series Heartbreak High will premiere on the streaming giant in 2022. The eight-part series will be inspired by the beloved original 90s series, but “reimagined for a new generation”.
Filming is set to begin in New South Wales next year under the production of Fremantle Australia and Dutch company NewBe.
The show marks the first series commissioned by Que Minh Luu since joining Netflix as its director of originals in Australia back in July from ABC.

The original Heartbreak High premiered in 1994 on Network Ten before moving to ABC in 1997, and centred around students at the fictional Hartley High. With storylines that touched on racism, sexuality and drug use, it ran for seven seasons and was broadcast in over 25 countries around the world.
“What we want to do is reflect what it’s like to be a young person today,” Luu told The Guardian.
“We want to do it in a way that is uniquely Australian, and that puts on display that Australian sense of humour, which is self-deprecating and freaking brutal, irreverent and often inappropriate at inappropriate times.”
The news of the reboot arrives after Netflix made all seven seasons of the original show available to stream on the platform late last month to a rave reception, cracking its top 30 list of most-watched programs within days.
