Paul Simon has announced that he will be retiring from touring, announcing one final tour.
The Graceland legend posted a lengthy message to social media writing, “I’ve often wondered what it would feel like to reach the point where I’d consider bringing my performing career to a natural end.”
“Now I know: it feels a little unsettling, a touch exhilarating, and something of a relief.”
He will play his last shows in Europe and the US before calling it a day. He will still be, however, open to the occasional show in an, “acoustically pristine hall.”
Simon admitted that the loss of his lead guitarist Vincent N’guini, who died last December, was a contributing factor to the decision although it wasn’t the only reason.
“I feel the travel and time away from my wife and family takes a toll that detracts from the joy of playing,” he concluded.
He’s one of a number of legendary artists to announce their retirement from touring over the past few months. Elton John will retire after his forthcoming tour and Neil Diamond was forced to pull the pin ahead of planned shows.
Simon’s last show is planned for London in July with special guests James Taylor and Bonnie Raitt. At this point it looks like there will be no Australian shows.
