Pearl Jam’s Josh Klinghoffer Has Been Charged With Vehicular Manslaughter

Former Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist and current touring member of Pearl Jam, Josh Klinghoffer, is set to appear in a California court today to be arraigned on a misdemeanour charge of vehicular manslaughter without gross negligence.

The charge stem from a tragic incident that took place on March 18th, 2024, when Klinghoffer struck 47-year-old pedestrian Israel Sanchez with his SUV in Alhambra, California.

According to reports, Sanchez was walking in a crosswalk when he was hit from behind by Klinghoffer’s vehicle. Sanchez was rushed to a nearby hospital but sadly succumbed to his injuries shortly after.

In July, Sanchez’s family filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Klinghoffer, accusing him of being distracted while driving and failing to brake in time to avoid the accident.

Klinghoffer’s attorney, Andrew Brettler, then released a statement expressing deep sorrow over the accident.

“This was a tragic accident,” Brettler said. “After Josh struck the pedestrian in the intersection, he immediately pulled over, called 911, and remained at the scene until police and paramedics arrived. He has fully cooperated with authorities throughout the investigation.”

While the charge does not imply gross negligence, the arraignment marks a critical step in the legal proceedings that will determine Klinghoffer’s future in this case. Further updates are expected after Thursday’s court appearance.

The incident has drawn widespread attention, particularly within the music community, where Klinghoffer is known for his work with both the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Pearl Jam.

Klinghoffer is currently due to visit Australia with Pearl Jam for a Stadium tour this November.
