When All Tomorrow’s Parties announced their last ever holiday camp event, dubbed End Of An Era, they recruited Melbourne’s Civil Civic to share the stages with Mogwai, Ty Segull, and Fuck Buttons. Asked why, co-organiser Deborah Kee Higgins explained, “’cause they’re awesome.”
“We first played an ATP event in Melbourne on invitation from The Drones for the 2013 I’ll Be Your Mirror festival,” recalls Civil Civic’s guitarist and keyboardist Aaron Cupples. “Melbourne being our own home town and The Drones being good old friends it was a very proud moment. Besides being the perfect impetus for us to play live in Australia for the first time, that gig was amazing.”
The band’s next encounter with ATP came when they were recruited for the End Of An Era festival. “Ben [Green, bassist] was nearly dead with tonsillitis and returned to London immediately after the gig, which was ten barrels of fun and thankfully packed out despite being up against Shellac.”
Whilst staying in “one of the little holiday apartments at the festival site,” friend of the band Ben Strunin began filming the band’s activities, including their raucous performance and Aaron “hobnobbing” with the stars. The result is a portrait of Civil Civic and of the event as a whole.
Included is some incredible footage from the band’s fellow performers like Goat, Mogwai, Shellac, and Ty Seagull. The band are currently in the midst of an Indiegogo campaign to fund their second album. Check them out on Facebook over here and check out All Tomorrow’s Parties right here.
