Retro-pop rivivalist Iluka transports us back to 1970’s summertime in her dreamy new music video for ‘Ritual’, the Motown-laced title track from her latest EP.
Premiering exclusively via Music Feeds below, the clip showcases the singer-songwriter as the mysterious and multifaceted woman she is, contrasting her commanding boss-lady presence onstage with her adventurous, free-spirited side offstage.
“I was in this place of loneliness, this bitter sweet kind of feeling that comes after a relationship has ended and you’re reflecting back and in this self searching phase trying desperately to figure out who you are again,” explains Iluka of the track. “Then as I began playing it with the band and eventually took it into the studio, it became more of this celebration and defiant kind of song. The ritual of falling in and out of love, learning to stand on your own two feet again. To be defined as yourself, by yourself, and follow your own star.
“I guess I wanted the video to follow suit,” she tells Music Feeds. “To be this interweaving story that presents snapshots into my different worlds – the world as an artist on the road with my band, the world in the relationship that I am leaving, and the world with just me alone defining my own story, and I guess in some ways learning to find peace with that and ultimately some kind of liberation.”
The Triple J Unearthed-hyped Sydney artist is also in the midst of an East Coast tour to celebrate the arrival of the Ritual EP, which is out now.
