Sam Smith has won the Golden Globe for Best Original Song this year, winning for Writing’s On The Wall his theme for the latest Bond film Spectre.
Presented with the award by Katy Perry, Smith beat out a very strong selection of nominees to take out the award. Nominated alongside Smith were Ellie Goulding‘s “Love Me Live You Do” from Fifty Shades of Grey, Brian Wilson‘s “One Kind of Love” from Love & Mercy, Wiz Khalifa‘s “See You Again” ft. Charlie Puth from Furious 7, and Sumi Jo’s “Simple Song #3” from Youth.
Smith accepted the award with Jimmy Napes, with whom he co-wrote the song, with Smith visibly excited yet receiving the award with charming British humility.
“I genuinely didn’t think we were gonna get this,” he said while grasping the award, delivering the standard I’m not worthy and just so bloody humbled speech.
Peaking at No. 71 on the Billboard Hot 100, the track wasn’t exactly a huge hit with global markets, although it did hit No. 1 back at home on the U.K. singles chart. Still, the award probably more than makes up for that as Sam looks pretty chuffed up on stage.
