Scientists have paid tribute to late Motörhead frontman Lemmy Kilmister in perhaps the strangest way possible by naming a prehistoric crocodile after him.
Lemmy passed away in 2015 and while there have been plenty of heartfelt tributes to the rock legend, you get the feeling that he’d enjoy this one the most.
Scientists have named a prehistoric crocodile lemmysuchus obtusidens, a creature that lived more than 164 million years ago, after him.
University of Edinburgh palaeontologist Michela Johnson has told the National History Museum in London that it would have been, “one of the biggest coastal predators of its time.”
The specimen was originally dug up in the 20th century, however, it was incorrectly categorised until scientists took another look at the fossil and gave it a new classification.
“Although Lemmy passed away at the end of 2015, we’d like to think that he would have raised a glass to Lemmysuchus,” said museum curator Lorna Steel.
She further called the creature, “one of the nastiest sea creatures to have ever inhabited the Earth.”
The reconstruction of the specimen currently resides at The National History Museum in London.
