Following on from yesterday’s news from System Of A Down drummer John Dolmayan that the nu metal heroes will have a new album out soon, we’re here to throw a Serj Tankian-shaped spanner in the works, with the frontman all but nixing the plans during an AMA (ask me anything) on Reddit today.
As you can imagine, the 45-year-old singer was bombarded with questions from fans about whether a new album is in the works. His official response? “I am not opposed to making a System record at all. It just has to be the right time for us all in the band.”
Tankian stood by his previous statements that new material was dependent on everyone in the band being ready, saying, “We have to make a record when we think it’s time, not anyone else.” He also stated that the band have not agreed on a timetable for another album due to the time commitment it takes. When directly asked whether he actually had any interest in making a new SOAD record, the singer said, “Yes of course, otherwise I wouldn’t be discussing it at all.” Well, that’s at least a little reassuring, we guess.
During a gig at LA’s Hollywood Bowl on Monday night, Dolmayan raised the hopes of millions of fans when he said, “Next time we come back here, we’ll have a new fucking album!” It now seems that, instead of a short wait for a new album, the residents of Los Angeles are faced with a long wait for another gig in their city.
System Of A Down haven’t released any new material since 2005’s Mezmerize and Hypnotize and have been plagued by infighting, with bassist Shavo Odadjian taking to Facebook in May to accuse Tankian of holding the rest of the band back.
