It’s been confirmed what killed Irish singer Sinéad O’Connor, just over a year since her death. The “Nothing Compares 2 U” star was 56 when she was found unresponsive at her London home on July 26, 2023. Although her death had initially been ruled by coroners to have been due to natural causes, new details have now come out.

A newly released death certificate reveals that Carroll O’Connor died from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, ( COPD) and asthma. It also specified she had a “lower-grade respiratory tract infection,” said the Irish Independent.

The singer was laid to rest in Bray, Ireland last year. Several high-profile paid tribute to her, including Bob Geldof and Bono. Geldof claimed that he was very close to O’Connor. He told the Cavan Calling Festival that he and O’Connor had exchanged messages just weeks before she died. According to Geldof, she was a mixed bag of emotions sometimes. She felt “desperation and despair” one moment and was “laughing and joking” the very next.

She was very vocal about her mental health and the suicide attempts she’d had. The year before her death, she had lost her 17-year-old son Shane to suicide. In a wrenching social media post, she said that her “beautiful son. decided to end his earthly struggle today.”

Sinéad O’Connor is survived by three children: Jake, 37, Roisin, 29, and Yeshua, 18.
