Sony Speaks Out About Kesha’s Legal Battle, Says Her Contract Can’t Be Terminated

Sony has been silent throughout the ongoing legal battle between Kesha and her allegedly abusive producer Dr. Luke but a representative for the company has finally addressed the situation.

Scott A. Edelman, a legal representative for Sony, said that basically Sony is unable to terminate Kesha’s contract with the label.

“Sony has made it possible for Kesha to record without any connection, involvement or interaction with Luke whatsoever,” he said in a statement to the New York Times.

“But Sony is not in a position to terminate the contractual relationship between Luke and Kesha.”

The reasons for that, claims Edelman, is because Kesha is signed to Dr. Luke’s label, Kemosabe Records, a subsidiary of Sony, created through a separate deal with his production company Kasz Money Inc.

“Sony is doing everything it can to support the artist in these circumstances, but is legally unable to terminate the contract to which it is not a party,” he continued.

The label was created in 2011 and has released music from Kesha as well as LunchMoney Lewis, Elliphant and Juicy J. All of those artists are yet to speak out about Kesha, however, a number of artists signed to Sony have.

Both Ariana Grande and Kelly Clarkson, two of the label’s most high-profile singings, have come out in support of Kesha.

Dr. Luke took to Twitter during the week to deny ever raping or having sex with Kesha as has been alleged.

“But I feel confident when this is over the lies will be exposed and the truth will prevail,” he wrote.

“All I ever wanted was to be able to make music without being afraid, scared, or abused,” Kesha wrote in a statement posted to her Facebook yesterday. “This case has never been about a renegotiation of my record contract – it was never about getting a bigger, or a better deal. This is about being free from my abuser.”

While Sony has claimed that it has made it possible for Kesha to make music without Dr. Luke she wrote in the statement, “I would be willing to work with Sony if they do the right thing and break all ties that bind me to my abuser.”

I'm so, so beyond humbled and thankful for all of the support I'vereceived from everyone. Words cannot really express... Posted by Kesha on Wednesday, 24 February 2016
