Police sniffer dog operation underway outside Melbourne Showgrounds during Soundwave

Soundwave Melbourne Sees 38 Drug-Related Arrests

Victoria police have arrested 38 festivalgoers over the weekend at the Melbourne leg of Soundwave Festival.

Police seized drugs including ecstasy, amphetamine and cannabis in Melbourne as part of a Passive Alert Detection sniffer dog operation.

The arrests included 37 males and only one female. Of the 38 arrests, only 2 will be charged on summons. 20 received drug diversions while the remaining 16 were given cannabis cautions.

In Victoria a drug diversion gives offenders arrested on minor drug offences the chance to settle the matter out of court and avoid a criminal record by either agreeing to counselling or attending an education course.

The event was close to reaching its 35,000 person capacity.

The two day festival took place in Melbourne and Adelaide this weekend, and is set to move onto Sydney and Brisbane next weekend for its final 2015 dates.
