Spotify has joined in on decade-end list fever with its annual end of year wrap-up.
As usual, the streaming giant has shared the most-streamed artists of 2019, which includes Post Malone, Billie Eilish and Ariana Grande this spin ’round the sun. They’ve also, among other things, shared the most-streamed songs of the year – Camila Cabello and Shawn Mendes’ ‘Señorita’, Billie Eilish hit ‘bad guy’ and Post Malone/Swae Lee collab ‘Sunflower’.
But that’s not all – we now also know stats from 2010-2019 thanks to Spotify’s ‘A Decade Wrapped’ list.
The most-streamed artist of the decade is a not entirely surprising result, with the honour going to Drake. The rapper has released five studio albums since 2010, most recently last year’s 25-track mammoth Scorpion.
After that, Ed Sheeran, Post Malone, Ariana Grande and Eminem make the cut for top five.
Most-streamed tracks include Sheeran’s ‘Shape of You’ up front, Drake, Kyla and WizKid’s ‘One Dace’, Post Malone’s 21 Savage-featuring ‘rockstar’ and The Chainsmokers and Halsey’s hit ‘Closer’.
As The Washington Post acknowledge, it’s important to take this list with a grain of salt, as the stats exist “within a self-constructed reality” and don’t necessarily reflect what people were listening to outside the streaming service.
For instance, Beyoncé’s 2016 album Lemonade was Tidal-exclusive for three years, not reaching Spotify until the middle of this year.
It’s a similar case for Taylor Swift, who pulled her music from Spotify in 2014 with the release of 1989, only restoring her back catalogue to the service in June 2017.
Either way, the lists still paint a fairly interesting portrait of the pop music landscape over the past decade, when gearing albums towards streaming arguably became top priority for many artists and their labels.
