As Australia gets revved up for an impending election, Sydney’s hip hop artists are shouting out for social change.
On Wednesday 14th July, some of Sydney’s best hip hop musicians and visual artists will take over the Oxford Art Factory, infusing the airwaves with lyrical rhymes, bouncy beats, and art exploding from the Aussie street scene. But this event is more than just hip hop heaven.
Oxfam Australia’s The Hip Hop Approach is a response to people wanting a fresh approach to talking about poverty and issues around injustice.
On the night, artists will rock up with something to say. Through their own unique form of expression, rappers, DJs, vocalists, and sketch and mural artists will talk about the injustices they see around them, and the solutions that could lead to reducing poverty and inequality in our world.
This is not a fundraiser. It’s a forum for discussion. Whatever you feel aligned with, whether it be international aid, climate change, Indigenous rights, refugee policy – or something else right out of your backyard, this is an opportunity to vent views and ideas for a better world, while partying with some high-quality hip hop acts.
WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?
Those willing can have their opinions recorded and produced into short films and podcasts post-event. These will be distributed to the wider community and to people in power – taking the opinions and ideas expressed on the night to a wider audience, and inspiring others to stand up for change.
