The Basics’ New Song ‘The Lucky Country’ Is A Wake Up Call To Australia

The Basics are putting Australia on notice with their new single The Lucky Country. They want to shake us out of our “what’s in it for me?” culture and get involved in shaping the future of our country, without shame. The Melbourne trio have also announced a string of dates behind the single to make sure we get the message.

Musically, The Lucky Country plays like straight-up classic Aussie pub rock, with guitars and drums building a sense of urgency to match the protest song’s message. Lyrically the single is a history lesson and a dose of reality, delivered with an unapologetic, genuine Australian twang.

The Lucky Country is immersed in the underdog spirit that we hold so dear as part of our national identity. As the band puts it, The Lucky Country is a “rock’n’roll rant” that strikes back against “the age of entitlement” and “the Abbott-Shorten-Palmer-Milne circus”.

“We’re songwriters, but we’re not just here to talk about love, heartbreak and getting drunk,” says Basics’ Kris Schroeder. “We believe in reflecting something of the society we live in, and right now there are a lot of people who seem to think that they’re better off sticking our heads in the sand and pretending the rest of the world isn’t there.”

Schroeder says its time to disregard labels that you’re a ‘hippy’, ‘bleeding heart’, or ‘unpatriotic’ if you want to stand for matters like education, the environment, and respect for other cultures. “Maybe someone needs to take Australia by the wrist, give it a shake and say “WAKE UP”. And why not a bunch of musicians to do it?”

The Basics already made political waves earlier this year when they launched The Basics Rock’n’Roll Party. The BRRP are currently looking to register the party with the Victorian Electoral Commission in time for the upcoming state election.

The band have also announced, via Facebook, they will be conducting a live Twitter session tonight from 7:00-7:30pm AEDT. All three members of the Basics, Schroeder, Tim Heath, and Wally De Backer (aka Gotye) will be involved. You can join in via The Basics’ Twitter handle @the3basics.

The Basics will hit the road from mid-December and tour behind the new single from their new EP, which the three-piece have been working on in London’s Abbey Road studio. Tickets for The Basics The Lucky Country Tour go on sale from 9:00AM, Friday October 31st. Full tour details below.

Now listen to The Lucky Country and get motivated.
