The Flaming Lips Announced For MONA FOMA 2016

Influential US psych-rockers The Flaming Lips are the first act to be announced for MONA FOMA 2016 — Hobart’s Museum of Old and New Art’s (MONA) Festival of Music and Art (FOMA), or Mofo for short.

The Flaming Lips, who were last in Australia for Falls Festival and Southbound in 2012/13, are primed and prepped to take on MONA’s outdoor stage during Mofo, so be prepared for their weird, wonderful and super-colourful live show, which can feature everything from inflatable space-bubbles to backup dancers in animal onesies and a huge neon vagina the band have been known to use to walk onto the stage.

The Flaming Lips’ appearance at Mofo 2016 will take place around their scheduled slot at New Zealand’s new McLaren Valley Festival in early January.

The group’s latest studio album is 2014’s With a Little Help from My Fwends, which is a track-for-track tribute to The Beatles’ album Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. Prior to that, The Flaming Lips’ latest all-original album is 2013’s The Terror.

In August, MONA FOMA organisers said the festival will reemerge as “a new beast” in 2016, with a lineup to rival last year’s sets from the likes of Swans, Amanda Palmer and Paul Kelly.

The full Mofo lineup is set to arrive on Friday, 16th October.
