The National To Play ‘Sorrow’ For 6-Hours Straight At New York Gallery

The National have announced plans that will put their die-hard fans to the ultimate test. Will they be able to survive a 6-hour long rendition of their mega-hit Sorrow? In writing, the idea might seem tedious but when coupled with the endless vision of artist Ragnar Kjartansson for a installation/performance art piece at New York’s MoMA PS1.

The aptly named A Lot Of Sorrow will kick off around midday on Sunday, 5th May and will allow the track, which featured on the band’s 2010 album High Violet, to take flight in a way we’ve never seen.

A press release for the occasion explains, “By stretching a single pop song into a day-long tour de force the artist continues his explorations into the potential of repetitive performance to produce sculptural presence within sound.”

The gallery further elaborates, “As in all of Kjartansson’s performances, the idea behind A Lot of Sorrow is devoid of irony, yet full of humour and emotion. It is another quest to find the comic in the tragic and vice versa.”

Hopefully the band will be busting out more than one jam when they’re in town for Splendour In The Grass this July, but with a brand-new album on the way we shouldn’t be too concerned.
