Vinyl album sales in the US reached a modern peak last week, with 2.11 million LPs sold in the States in the week ending Thursday, 23rd December, the most since at least 1991. That marked a 45% increase to the previous week (1.46 million), with last-minute Christmas shopping likely accounting for the huge jump.
As Billboard reports, it’s the biggest sales week for vinyl albums ever since MRC Data began tracking music sales in 1991, and also the first time sales cracked the 2 million figure. The previous record (since 1991) was set last year, with 1.84 million vinyl albums sold in the week ending 24th December, 2020.
The best-selling vinyl album for the week was Adele‘s 30, selling 59,000 copies and ranking first in Billboard‘s vinyl albums chart for the fifth week in a row. It’s the best-selling vinyl LP for the year, with total US sales sitting at 293,000.
Other big sellers in recent weeks have included Taylor Swift‘s Red (Taylor’s Version), Olivia Rodrigo‘s SOUR and Billie Eilish‘s Happier Than Ever.
