The Wombats ‘A Couple Songs Away’ From New Album

Liverpool trio The Wombats have revealed that they are “just a couple of songs away” from following-up their most recent single, Your Body Is A Weapon, with a full-length studio release. The band explained to Triple J that they want to be “ecstatic” about the release of their third album.

“We’re pretty much at a stage where we could release a full album now,” singer Matthew Murphy told Veronica and Lewis. “But we want to be ecstatic about it. So we’re just a couple of songs away. It’s a matter of smoking them out of their caves – squeezing that sponge out even more.”

The boys — singer Matthew, bass player Tord Øverland Knudsen, and drummer Dan Haggis — have been in the country for appearances at Falls, Southbound and Field Day festivals, and have been including the new single in their set, but say that’s all the new material fans will hear for now.

“It’s frustrating, because we wanna play these songs live,” said Dan. “We’d like to play a couple more new ones when we tour, but we actually can’t play them yet. We don’t know how. It’d be a disaster.” Meanwhile Matthew added that he is “more excited about this one than the last two.”

“We want to find the last pieces of this jigsaw, and then it’s balls to the fire,” he continued. The band speculated that the album, a follow-up to 2011’s critically-acclaimed The Wombats Proudly Present: This Modern Glitch, would be released later this year.
