There’s An FX Documentary Series About Tupac And His Mother Afeni Shakur Coming

A forthcoming documentary series called Outlaw: The Saga of Afeni and Tupac Shakur will explore the lives of hip-hop icon Tupac Shakur and his mother, Afeni.

Greenlit by FX Networks, the five-part series will shine a light on the rapper and his mother, who was an author, activist and former Black Panther member.

The series will be directed by Allen Hughes, who directed early music videos for Tupac. You may recognise that name as he worked on the 2017 HBO series The Defiant Ones, which focused on the careers of Dr. Dre and producer Jimmy Iovine.

The rapper and his mother had a somewhat strained relationship due to her drug use, with the pair eventually reconciling. Tupac famously wrote ‘Dear Mama’, a tribute to Afeni, on third studio album Me Against the World. After her son’s death from a drive-by shooting in 1996, Afeni Shakur became a co-executor of his son’s estate.

Afeni died in 2016 from a cardiac arrest.

From Emmy-nominated director Allen Hughes (The Defiant Ones) comes a five-part cinematic television event exploring two voices, activist Afeni Shakur and hip-hop icon Tupac Shakur, that could not be silenced. Told through the eyes of the people who knew them best, Outlaw is an intimate wide-angle portrait of the most inspiring and dangerous mother-son duo in American history, whose unified message of freedom, equality, persecution and justice are more relevant today than ever.
