Local rap superstar Tkay Maidza has been pretty quiet since the release of 2018’s Last Year Was Weird Vol. 1 EP, but now she’s made her return with buzzing US rapper JPEGMAFIA for new single ‘Awake.’
It’s a dark, thumping, hip-hop banger with aggressive, industrial production that is matched with Tkay’s fiery and ominous vocals, with JPEGMAFIA’s sinister spits elevating it to another level.
“The song is about insomnia,” said Tkay of the song in a statement.
“I came up with the hook one night when I couldn’t sleep and it was in the middle of the night of a writing trip where I was up late ’til at least 3am every night for a whole month. We flipped the track and made it about what I do whilst I’m not sleeping. Then JPEG came and took it to another dimension.”
The haunting song comes with an equally haunting video, which you can watch below – heads up, it comes with an epilepsy warning. Bonus: the end of the video seems to feature another new Tkay song, ‘IDC IF U BE DED.’
