After Aussie music fans lodged more than 2.6 million votes in triple j‘s historic, first ever Hottest 100 of Australian songs, the results were counted down live from 100 – 1 today across the entire triple j network – triple j, Double J, Unearthed Radio and Hottest – with the top spot ultimately being taken out by INXS’s 1988 classic ‘Never Tear Us Apart’ off their iconic Kick LP.
The top 3 was rounded out by Aussie hip-hop veterans’ Hilltop Hoods‘ 2003 anthem ‘The Nosebleed Section at number #2 and The Veronicas‘ ‘Untouched’ at #3.
INXS – ‘Never Tear Us Apart’
A stack of legacy artists bagged multiple entries, with INXS also snagging the #59th spot on the list with ‘Need You Tonight’, Hilltop Hoods bagging an additional two spots with ‘1955 [Ft. Montaigne, Tom Thum]’ coming in at #73 and ‘Cosby Sweater’ at #64.
Elsewhere, Jimmy Barnes and Bernard Fanning both got a big guernsey, with Barnsey getting up with ‘Working Class Man’ (#56) as well as a pair of Cold Chisel tracks – ‘Khe Sanh’ and ‘Flame Trees’ voted in back-to-back at #7 and #8 in the top 10.
Fanning snagged four total entries with his solo track ‘Wish You Well’ hitting #57, and Powderfinger Odyssey Number 5 banger ‘My Happiness’ cracking the top 10 at #6, while ‘These Days’ came in at #14 and ‘(Baby I’ve Got You) On My Mind’ nabbed #70.
Meanwhile, other veteran acts live Crowded House, Midnight Oil, AC/DC and Silverchair all nabbed three songs apiece.
On the more modern side of things, Gang Of Youths also scored a hattrick (#87 ‘The Deepest Sighs, The Frankest Shadows’, #60 ‘Let Me Down Easy’, #42 ‘Magnolia’).
The newest song to make the countdown was Amyl & The Sniffers‘ ‘Hertz’ from 2021, voted in at #89.
Triple j’s decision to launch the first ever Australian-only Hottest 100 ballot coincides with the youth broadcaster celebrating its 50th year on air, and follows criticism off the back of January’s Hottest 100 of 2024, which was widely noted for its lack of local representation in favour of big international superstars such as Chappell Roan, Charli XCX, Billie Eilish, Lola Young, Gracie Abrams, Kendrick Lamar, Fred Again and more dominating the countdown.
