Just when you thought your dad’s Spotify Wrapped was the most nostalgia-loaded Aussie rock playlist you’d ever seen, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has entered the chat with his picks for triple j’s Hottest 100 of Australian Songs.
DJ Albo took to socials this week to share his top 10 nods for the all-Aussie edition of the iconic countdown, confessing it was “hard to narrow down to just 10”. His list is pretty much wall-to-wall dad rock classics — from Midnight Oil to Paul Kelly to Spiderbait (tbh the man’s taste is exactly what you’d expect from a guy who once quoted Grinderman, Tom Waits and Chuck Berry in parliament).
“Hard to narrow down to just 10”
Here’s what made the PM’s shortlist:
- The Angels – ‘Am I Ever Gonna See Your Face Again’
- Cold Chisel – ‘Flame Trees’
- The Fauves – ‘Dogs Are The Best People’
- The Go-Betweens – ‘Cattle and Cane’
- You Am I – ‘Purple Sneakers’
- Hunters & Collectors – ‘Throw Your Arms Around Me’
- The Triffids – ‘Wide Open Road’
- Spiderbait – ‘Buy Me a Pony’
- Midnight Oil – ‘Beds Are Burning’
- Paul Kelly – ‘How To Make Gravy’
Albo’s list arrives as triple j continues celebrating 50 years on air with this historic Hottest 100 countdown — the first time the vote has been exclusively focused on Australian tracks that have left a lasting mark.
Voting is open right-the-heck-now and closes Thursday, 17th July at 5pm AEST, with the full countdown airing on Saturday, 26th July from 10am AEST and broadcast across the full fam of triple j channels (triple j, Double J, triple j Unearthed and Hottest).
Whether you’re voting for the pub rock legends, 2000’s bangers or that one track from Unearthed that’s been living in your brain rent-free, now’s the time to rep Aussie music in all its glory.
Get your votes in right here before the clock runs out.
