triple j has completed the rollout of the supplementary Hottest 200 Of Australian Songs list, which showcases the 100 songs that narrowly missed out on being in the first-ever Hottest 100 Of Australian Songs from last weekend. The list was broadcast in groups of 20 on sister station Double J throughout the week, with morning presenter Michael Hing sharing 10 per day during his slot and afternoon presenter Dylan Lewis sharing the next 10 during his. The full list can be viewed below.
Taking out the proverbial top spot was Kylie Minogue, whose chart-topping 2000 song ‘Spinning Around’ came up just short at 101. According to the station, only 30 votes separated it from what end up being number 100 in the countdown: The Screaming Jets’ 1991 hit ‘Better’. Minogue was also the only act with three entries in the 200, having also charted with ‘Where The Wild Roses Grow’ (with Nick Cave) at 179 and ‘Confide In Me’ at 175 – which were both released back in 1995.

The entire 200 saw every Australian winner of previous Hottest 100s charting, ranging from the first Australian winner in Spiderbait‘s ‘Buy Me A Pony’ from 1996 to the most recent, Flume‘s ‘Say Nothing’, circa 2022. The only exception was The Wiggles‘ cover of Tame Impala’s ‘Elephant’, which won in 2021 but was ineligible for voting here due to being done for the station’s Like A Version segment.
Several artists got two entries in the 200 – including INXS, who took out the Hottest 100 Of Australian Songs with their beloved 1987 single ‘Never Tear Us Apart’. Their 1982 track ‘Don’t Change’ came in at number 194, while ‘New Sensation’ (also off 1987’s Kick) ranked at 139.
Other double-ups in the countdown included Pete Murray (‘So Beautiful’ at 193 and ‘Better Days’ at 110), Tame Impala (‘Borderline’ at 191 and ‘Elephant’ at 130), Flume (‘Rushing Back’ with Vera Blue at 189 and ‘Say Nothing’ with MAY-A at 176), Boy & Bear (‘Feeding Line’ at 188 and ‘Southern Sun’ at 123), the John Butler Trio (‘Better Than’ at 178 and ‘Zebra’ at 138), Ball Park Music (‘Exactly As You Are’ at 173 and ‘She Only Loves Me When I’m There’ at 168), Sia (‘Breathe Me’ at 172 and ‘Chandelier’ at 102), Spacey Jane (‘Lots Of Nothing’ at 145 and ‘Feeding The Family’ at 111) and Birds Of Tokyo (‘Plans’ at 132 and ‘Lanterns’ at 108).
At the end of the Hottest 200 broadcast, Lewis revealed that the song that just missed out on the Hottest 200 itself was ‘Living In The 70s’ by Skyhooks, which theoretically came in at 201. Double J will be broadcasting the 200 in its entirety from 10am local time on Saturday, August 2nd.
