Victorian Nightclub Cancels ‘Chris Brown Tribute Night’, Following Backlash

A Victorian nightclub has cancelled plans to host a ‘Chris Brown Tribute Night’, following criticism from some members of the public.

‘Ruby’ at Morning Peninsula venue Merchant Lane was scheduled to throw the ‘Freaky Friday Chris Brown Tribute Night’ this Friday, 13th July, as part of its weekly Hustlefridays party series.

The party promised “a massive Chris Brown tribute hour”, all set to “some Chris Brown classics”.

After the party was announced earlier this week, a number of people criticised organisers, given that Brown has previously been convicted of domestic violence offences against ex-girlfriend Rihanna and was denied a visa to enter Australia on character grounds in 2015. The singer was also arrested for alleged felony battery earlier this week.

A number of the negative comments about the Hustlefridays party (below) were hidden from the Hustlefridays Facebook page by page administrators, before all posts about the party were deleted on Tuesday afternoon.

Merchant Lane has since confirmed to Music Feeds that the party was cancelled shortly after people voiced their concerns, but both the venue and Hustlefridays’ promoters declined to comment further.

A similar incident occurred last year, when Melbourne nightclub Rats cancelled a controversial Chris Brown tribute party it was scheduled to host in July.

Brown’s 2015 Australian tour was cancelled following a petition campaign to deny him a visa over his past domestic violence convictions.
