Queensland locals Violent Soho, metalcore outfit The Amity Affliction and country group Halfway have taken home some of the biggest prizes from last night’s 2015 Queensland Music Awards.
Hosted by triple j‘s Sarah Howells and hip hop veteran Fred Leone (aka Rival MC), the 2015 QMAs saw Violent Soho claim the Album Of The Year award for their latest full-length, Hungry Ghost, while The Amity Affliction won The BOQ People’s Choice Most Popular Group Award and Halfway scored a nod for their track Dulcify, which won Song Of The Year and the Country Award.
Other awards on the night went to the likes of The Medics, whose song Wake Up took out the Indigenous Award, Cairns singer-songwriter Leanne Tennant, who collected the Blues & Roots Award for her track Bearing The Crown, and Airling’s song Wasted Pilots, which took out the coveted Pop Award.
The Grates’ recent single Holiday Home scooped the 2015 Rock Award, while producer The Kite String Tangle took home the Music Video Award for his Jason Bock-directed clip for Arcadia (below).
Screaming Tribesmen frontman Mick Medew, one of Queensland’s most influential rock singer/songwriters, was also awarded the Grant McLennan Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution to Queensland music. View the full list of winners, below.
The Queensland Music Awards receive hundreds of entries from published and unpublished artists from all over the state each year. QMusic Executive Officer Joel Edmondson says this year’s awards showed that Queensland’s musical talents are as strong as ever.
“Time and again, the Queensland Music Awards prove that Queensland produces some of Australia’s most talented and exciting musicians. The 2015 QMAs were no different,” Edmondson says.
“Queensland’s music industry is fueled by a unique kind of community spirit, giving emerging artists that extra bit of support they need to succeed. You can feel that spirit in the room at the QMAs.”
