It’s a little over a year until the 2020 United States presidential election, Rapper Cardi B has shared a clip from her recent interview with American Democratic presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders, in which she asks the Vermont senator about low wages.
A couple of weeks ago, Cardi, a vocal critic of President Trump, asked her Instagram followers to suggest questions to ask a Democratic candidate, with the most frequent topic being around raising minimum wage in America.
“What are we gonna do about wages in America?” Cardi asks Sanders in the clip, explaining that before she found success as a musician, she struggled to survive.
“For example, me as a New Yorker, not now, but when I was not famous. I just felt like no matter how many jobs I get, I wasn’t able to make ends meet. I wasn’t able to pay my rent, get transportation and eat,” she adds.
Sanders responded by acknowledging income disparity in America, addressing the millions of people earning what he considers “starvation wages” in the country.
“Can you imagine somebody today earning $9 an hour?” he asks, before going on to explain that legislation he introduced, recently passed in the House would raise the minimum wage in America to $15 per hour. Sanders also pointed out the importance of making it easier for workers to join their unions.
Cardi encouraged fans to continue sending in questions, promising they’ll be addressing more soon.
