Glasgow trio CHVRCHES have taken on a giant, performing a rendition of Justin Bieber’s massive hit What Do You Mean? and once again proving that they are excellent at covers.
The band took to BBC Radio 1‘s Live Lounge in the UK to perform the track. They opted to trade the tropical-house vibes of the Skrillex-produced track for a darker, twinkling sound elevated by Lauren Mayberry’s soaring vocals.
CHVRCHES have developed a knack for excellent covers. In the past they have taken on Justin Timberlake’s Cry Me A River, The Arctic Monkey’s Do I Wanna Know? and HAIM’s Falling – yet to deliver a stinker.
The original of What Do You Mean? has formed a conundrum for former Bieber haters who are enjoying the track. This alt-skewed cover will no doubt help those people, giving them a guilt-free way to spin the track.
It seems, however, that CHVRCHES have also had the same problem coming to terms with the changing opinion of Biebs.
“Honestly, after those two tunes [What Do You Mean? and Where Are U Now] I had to sit down with myself and thought, ‘OMG I’m a Justin Bieber fan, how did this happen,” said CHVRCHES’ Martin Doherty.
CHVRCHES are set to release their sophomore record Every Open Eye tomorrow.
