Common and Mos Def have treated fans at Soulfest Brisbane to a surprise onstage team-up, with the two American rappers giving Australia plenty of shout-outs during a short Down Under-themed freestyle.
In fan footage from the Soulfest set, Chi Town MC Common kicks things off. “We can just lay it down we get around / We told ya we under and we came down”. Mos Def takes over from there, “You know my style / You know what I’m all about”.
The schedule-challenged MC then delivers his nod to Australia, “Standing on top even down under / Never fumble or blunder.” AU Review reports Mos Def and Common also performed ’98 Black Star single Respiration while onstage together.
It’s been a tumultuous Australian tour for Mos Def. The rapper, now known as Yasiin Bey, cancelled his set at Brisbane’s Woolly Mammoth, 40-minutes after he was meant to take the stage. Soulfest promoters later confirmed a “sore throat” was the cause of cancellation.
Mighty Mos obviously hammered enough Strepsils to pull it together for Soulfest Brisbane but his cancelled sideshow came less than a week after he missed Soulfest Sydney slot completely, informing fans he missed his flight only hours before the festival began.
