Courtney Love always does things in excess, but now she’s taken it to a whole new, brilliant level.
She is celebrating the 20th anniversary of Hole‘s seminal third album Celebrity Skin in a huge way, by performing the title track and ‘Malibu’ with a backing band that’s about 1,500 people deep.
Back in July, the Hole frontwoman teamed up with a whole stack of guitarists, drummers, singers and whatever else to take over Artemio Franchi Stadium in Florence, Italy to perform the two songs, with proceeds going to the Italian non-profit Only the Brave Foundation and the San Patrignano youth recovery community.
In case you’re getting a bit of déjà vu from that time about that many people perform a few Foo Fighters songs in Italy back in 2015, you’d be right to. That group is called Rockin’1000, and after watching that video, Love said she fell in love with the idea.
“The first time I saw the Rockin’1000 video, I thought, I want to do that,” Love says in the video.
“The sight and sound of a thousand musicians connecting with their audience in this open, transcultural way was incredible. It reminded me of the early punk scene, with its community centred around diversity and acceptance.”
