When Aussie hip hop star Illy stepped up to triple j‘s Like A Version this morning, the Melburnian rapper wasn’t content with just covering one song outside of his genre, as per the usual brief, but instead put his own spin on Silverchair, Hilltop Hoods, Paul Kelly and Flume in one handy little five minute package in celebration of the start of Ausmusic Month.
Backed by a full band, the Heard It All hitmaker kicked things off by rapping over Silverchair’s 1994 debut Tomorrow, before segueing into the Hilltop Hoods smash The Nosebleed Section, and slipping in a line or two of Powderfinger‘s My Happiness. He then raps – yes, raps – Paul Kelly’s To Her Door, before busting out Flume’s On Top. Wowzers.
It’s not the first time Illy’s appeared on Like A Version – he first popped his cherry back in 2009, giving us his spin on the Pixies classic Where Is My Mind? The wordsmith drops his fourth studio full-length, Cinematic, next Friday, 8th November via his own new imprint label OneTwo.
