Anonymous Club, the new documentary film from director Danny Cohen, centres on the life of Melbourne-based singer-songwriter Courtney Barnett during the world tour behind her second album, Tell Me How You Really Feel.
The film is currently screening at the Sydney Film Festival and it’ll be showing at ACMI as part of Melbourne Music Week in December. It’s taken until now for the official trailer to drop; find that below.
Anonymous Club was filmed over a three year period and shot on 16mm film. The film includes narration from Barnett in the form of an audio diary that she kept during the time of its filming. Anonymous Club premiered at this year’s Melbourne International Film Festival and screened for audiences at the Brisbane International Film Festival.
According to the official press release, “the film delivers frank and unprecedented insight into Barnett’s creative process, the sacrifices and inner conflicts set in motion by fame, and the sometimes dark backdrop to her whimsical, relatably poetic compositions.”
Barnett’s third album, Things Take Time, Take Time, came out last week. Barnett performed the single, ‘Write a List of Things to Look Forward To’ on the final season of Ellen earlier this week. For the occasion, Barnett put together a band including drummer Stella Mozgawa (Warpaint, Kurt Vile), Cate Le Bon on bass and Zach Dawes of Mini Mansions on keys.
Barnett will tour the album in Australia in March 2022.
