This morning saw Ta-Ku and Wafia drop into the triple j studios to put their own spin on a 2004 classic, JoJo‘s Leave (Get Out) – digging up your early noughties nostalgia.
Ta-ku and Wafia have formed a formidable partnership this year, with Netherlands-hailing singer seemingly able to unlock the hidden potential of Ta-ku’s musicianship and production like no one else. Having already performed some incredible shows, as well as releasing an EP together called (m)edian – it was only fitting that they take it a step further and tackle this week’s Like A Version as a team.
Joined by a throng of backup singers and guest instrumentalists, the pair gave us an emotive cover that was tinged with Ta-ku’s typically bluesy feels, and saw Wafia give the most soulful rendition of JoJo’s lyrics that you’ll likely ever hear.
Ta-ku revealed that some *actual online contact* with JoJo herself was the inspiration to perform a cover of her 2004 track: “Low and behold JoJo actually tweeted me, she tweeted one of my older EPs,” Ta-ku revealed to Matt & Alex. “So then I tweeted her back but she didn’t hit me back…”
While in the studio the super-duo also gave a gorgeous, spine-tingling rendition of one of their original tracks; Love Somebody, from their collaborative EP.
Check out both tunes below.
