In the lead-up to his new album, Mandatory Fun, Weird Al Yankovic has released a song that many on the internet wish we’d written ourselves. Titled Word Crimes, the track is a parody of Robin Thicke‘s hit Blurred Lines and takes to task the improper spelling and grammar recidivists of society.
Don’t know (or care) when to use “less” or “fewer”? Blatant participle dangler? Do “good” and not “well”? Do you use numbers instead of letters but aren’t seven or named Prince? Congratulations, you just made Weird Al Yankovic’s shit list, and should probably head back to primary school.
According to Rolling Stone, Yankovic discussed the song during a recent appearance on The View. “Word Crimes is about a year old. There were already about 10,000 parodies of [Blurred Lines] and they were all rapey,” he explained. “And I thought nobody had done a song about grammar.”
Word Crimes is the second of eight videos that Yankovic will release this week to celebrate the release of Mandatory Fun. He kicked things off yesterday with a parodic ode to YOLO license plates and Comic Sans titled Tacky, a take on Pharrell‘s Happy, which featured an all-star, tackified cast.
