Weezer Confirm Work On A New Album

Following reports that the band were due to start recording sessions with former Cars frontman Ric Ocasek in January, Weezer have now shared a short, cryptic video teasing their return to the studio, though no confirmation of whether the Blue Album and Green Album producer has joined them.

The video, titled simply =w=, opens with an effects-laden clip of a new song, which soundtracks footage of the band in the studio. The glitchy clip ends with frontman Rivers Cuomo adjusting his iconic thick-rimmed glasses, before the tantalising words “In the studio now” appear on the screen.

Last month saw Weezer embark on a five-day cruise with Cat Power, Toro y Moi, DIIV, The Cribs, and Ash, among others. The band debuted a new song dubbed Back to the Shack, in which Cuomo sang about “losing his way as an artist,” the suckiness of disco, and drummer Patrick Wilson.

The band’s last studio album was 2010’s well-received Hurley. Details about the new album, if that is indeed what the clip is teasing, are scant, but the excerpts played in the video seem to indicate a return to the crunchy power-pop guitars which were for so long a trademark of the group.
