Weird Al Yankovic performed a show-stealing medley of TV theme songs during the recent Emmy Awards. The beloved purveyor of parody added lyrics to the normally instrumental theme tunes that dissected the finer points of Game of Thrones, Homeland, Mad Men, Modern Family, and more.
After The Lonely Island member Andy Samberg and host Seth Meyers joked that today’s theme songs aren’t what they used to be, surprise guest Yankovic appeared and proceeded to send-up Mad Men, singing, “Mad Men, Mad Men, watch these ad men / Do their thinking, while they’re stinking drunk / Jon Hamm’s never won an Emmy / Oh, who cares? He’s still Jon freaking Hamm“.
It set the tone for the rest of the medley as Yankovic and a crew of dancers ploughed through parodies of Scandal, Homeland, which included a jab at Princess Bride star Mandy Patinkin, and Modern Family. However, the highlight of the performance was Yankovic’s epic take on GoT.
After suggesting viewers “Don’t get too attached to a certain guy, have a backup“, Yankovic urged author George R.R. Martin, creator of the A Song of Ice and Fire series that inspired Game of Thrones, to “Type George, type as fast as you can“. Samberg, dressed as King Joffrey, then handed Martin, who was sitting in the audience, a typewriter. “We need more scripts“, sang Yankovic.
Yankovic is currently gearing up for his 2015 North American tour to promote new album Mandatory Fun. The album made eight days’ worth of headlines last month after the parodist unveiled eight painstakingly-made music videos over eight days, each based on a track from the new album.
