Angry HMV Staff Hijack Official Twitter, Live Tweet Mass Firing

Disgruntled HMV staff have made their final stand during the last moments of their employment with the company. Obviously angry with the current climate within the struggling retailer, which is currently rolling out mass lay-offs, employees let loose via the company’s official twitter account, before being shut down once and for all.

The lesson here? Make sure you’ve got control of your social media accounts BEFORE you start firing your employees.

Almost all evidence of the tweets has since been removed, though in order to avoid public fallout on account of deleting them, HMV later tweeted that “One of our departing colleagues was understandably upset. We’re still here thou” after discovering that “Our @hmvtweets picked up a lot of attention today, it’s clearly been a tough day for us all at hmv, please stick with us.”

The Mirror managed to get hold of a screenshot from the account prior to the tweets being removed. The mystery tweeter initially told the world “We’re tweeting live from HR where we’re all being fired! Exciting!!!” before describing the following events as “mass execution of loyal employees who love the brand”.

It didn’t take long for upper management to cotton on to the chicanery, with one of the final tweets reading “Just overheard our Marketing Director (he’s staying, folks!) ask “How do I shut down Twitter?.” From that point on, tweets were deleted moments after being posted.

Despite more than 190 jobs being axed, it will be business as usual on the retail level. All shops will remain open with most of the sacking being middle management and HR positions. 60 people were apparently fired while the twitter account was annexed.
