Billy Corgan: “The Future Of The Smashing Pumpkins Is Kind Of Murky”

The Smashing Pumpkins have just been in the country playing mighty shows with Soundwave and now it looks like it may have been the last time we see them here, with frontman Billy William Corgan declaring “the future of The Smashing Pumpkins is kind of murky”.

In an interview with Peru’s Radio Oasis Corgan said, “I’ve only committed to the idea of The Smashing Pumpkins through, pretty much, the end of this year and after that, I’m gonna see how it goes.”

“I feel like I really need to evaluate the musical purpose of the Pumpkins, because more and more the audience is fixated on the past,” he explained.

“I know a lot of the audience will say, ‘Well, I like your music better from the ’90s, than say the music you’re making today.’ But I know they’re not listening to the music of today, as much as they were listening to that music. And they’re also not listening in the same contextual thing.”

Corgan doesn’t want to be part of something that is “fading like an iceberg into the past,” however, he ended on a slightly more positive note saying, “I’m happy to do what I’m doing and I’m very pleased that people enjoy it.”

If the Pumpkins mastermind was to disband his now 26-year-old outfit, we might see some new material first. During February’s Soundwave tour, Corgan gave Music Feeds more details on the highly secretive follow-up release to 2014’s Monuments To An Elegy. It was once-titled Day For Night, now it is simply untitled — for now.

“It’s all written, and as soon as I get back from this tour, in April, I’m going to go and record it,” he said. The album may now not see the light of day until 2016, but a single release was possible towards the end of 2015.

Today, though, it seems Corgan’s mind is less on music and more on sport. He took to Twitter to show his support for Australia in their Cricket World Cup match against India today, donning an Aussie jersey. Check out the picture below.
