Written by Mike Hohnen on November 21, 2016

UPDATE 22/11/16: Triple j has announced Matt and Alex’s replacements, and has farewelled a number of other presenters.

ORIGINAL STORY: We might be on the final leg of 2016, but it appears the universe is going to throw whatever it can at us to make 2016 go down as the worst. year. ever.

This morning, lords of triple j‘s ‘Breakfast’ radio show Matt Okine and Alex Dyson announced that they will be hanging up their crowns at the end of the year.

If you were listening to the boys this morning, chances are you’ve only just composed yourself to get through the day, but it’s time to relive it.

Audio of Matt and Alex’s emotional announcement (below) sees the boys explain, “We won’t be joining you every single morning in 2017 as we have for the past three years,” before clearing the air of any potential miscommunication, adding, “We haven’t been pushed, we’re jumping.”

Understandably, the boys are as gutted as we are. As the announcement goes on, it’s fairly hard to not crumble into the foetal position, and by the end it’s literally impossible.

Through tears, Dyson reiterates the highlights of his career, explaining that meeting some of the biggest names in entertainment was nothing compared to “Being at Splendour In The Grass having an ER nurse come up to you and say, ‘You make a tough job easier.'”

It all becomes a bit to raw and soon the programming resumes as normal, and we are left to go about the day. Of course, whoever replaces Matt and Alex will surely do a masterful job, but there’s no two ways about it — this morning the nation lost a bit of its heart.

Thx 4 th mmrs, boys. May you pack ‘er up one final time.

Tune in to Matt and Alex’s teary farewell, below.
