Matt And Alex Parody Lana Del Rey’s ‘West Coast’ In Ode To WA

Lana Del Rey’s West Coast was, of course, about Los Angeles but triple j‘s Matt and Alex have spotted an opportunity to flip the track and pen a tribute to Australia’s west coast – Western Australia.

Billed as a “love letter to WA” the parody is full of backhanded compliments for the country’s biggest state. “Down on the West Coast, it’s pretty gnarly/For the two months that, you’re not in Bali,” they sing as they wander down a beach, chasing the occasional seagull and taking swigs from a goon sack.

They then proceed to take shots at the nightlife, the coffee and their beloved Freo Dockers. Oddly, WA’s residents are finding it more endearing than offensive with one YouTuber commenting, “if WA became its own country, this would be our national anthem.”

Australia’s never been one to really get into the whole east coast versus west coast debate that they have in the US, but out of nowhere Matt and Alex have just started one – it’s your move now WA.

It’s worth noting that triple j‘s Unearthed High winner Mosquito Coast are from WA so maybe the west coast is already one up on the east?
