New Big Day Out 2014 Details Emerge, Pearl Jam To Play 2-Hour Set

The Big Day Out 2014 machine is now in full swing with the official lineup being announced just last night. Following on from an flurry of interviews with top dogs Ken West, Adam Zammit and NZ promoter Campbell Smith, even more information about the festival has been revealed, including set times for headliners, stage arrangements and further lineup announcements.

While it’s still early days in terms of timetables for the festival, we now have a good idea of how things will run for the headlining acts. West and Zammit confirmed to Music Feeds last night that Pearl Jam are locked in for a 2-hour, full-concert set, which will be taking place on one of the festival’s main stages.

Though PJ are top of the bill, Blur will be the last band to perform at the event, taking to the stage as Pearl Jam wrap up. Blur will playing on a new main stage, dubbed The Love Stage, complementing the traditional Red and Blue stages. Love will also be home to acts like GroupLove and The Lumineers.

Of course, the lineup itself has been a hot topic. There IS another lineup announcement coming, but don’t expect many big names. Adam Zammit has said that bookings this year were heavily affected by the Grammy Awards ceremony, which this year clashes with the BDO Sydney and Melbourne dates. This has already discounted acts such as Kendrick Lamar, and is sure to include other big names.

It’s yet to be confirmed exactly how many new names will be announced, or when, though West has said the second announcement will bring the lineup to around 45 acts.

With Pearl Jam on the bill, crowd safety is of paramount concern this year. In a live Q&A with the NZ Herald earlier today, Campbell Smith confirmed that the festival will employ a new “punter-friendly” barrier system in 2014, said to be very different to the D-shaped barrier of previous years.

As for sideshows, well, the only thing we know for certain so far is that there will be no sideshows for Pearl Jam while they are in town, as confirmed by Smith.

Both organisers and fans seem to be in agreement that, regardless of what they think of this year’s line up, it’s a much more promising bill than last year. There’s no details yet on when we can expect more information, though at this rate we won’t be waiting long.
