‘The Legend of Dio: A Metal Musical’ To Premiere In Melbourne

The music of metal legend Ronnie James Dio will be celebrated once again when a new musical dedicated entirely to the late musician, dubbed The Legend of Dio: A Metal Musical, makes its world premiere in Australia this March.

Described as “equal parts Tenacious D, Rock of Ages and Shakespeare”, the fictional comedy will debut at Melbourne’s Corner Hotel on Friday, March 6th.

Based around Dio’s music, lyrics and imagery, The Legend of Dio will feature the songs of Dio, Black Sabbath, Rainbow and Heaven & Hell, and will also star Melbourne metal band Barbariön. The group’s frontman, Myles Tauchert will play the always popular role of Satan.

The show’s writer and director, William James Smith — of Melbourne rockers H.M.A.S Vendetta — will take the stage as Dio. Kat Stargazer from Melbourne power metal band Horizons Edge will play the character of Dio’s second wife, Wendy Gaxiola, who was also his manager.

Ronnie James Dio passed away in May 2010, of metastasized stomach cancer. Metal heavyweights Metallica honoured Dio’s memory last year, by putting together a Dio tribute medley titled Ronnie Rising.
