FBi‘s Sydney Music Art & Culture (SMAC) Awards have come and gone for another year, with Sydney band The Preatures, psych-rockers Cloud Control and electronic maestro Elizabeth Rose amongst the big winners of the night.
The SMAC Awards recognise the many talented artists and industry folk that have heavily influenced and greatly shaped Sydney’s creative culture. The awards cover all contributions to the city’s creative life including those in music, theatre, visual art, film and food.
The Preatures’ grooving hit Is This How You Feel? took out the title of Best Song. Electronic producer, singer-songwriter and all round maestro Elizabeth Rose walked away with the title of Next Big Thing, while the prestigious Record Of The Year went to Blue Mountains outfit Cloud Control for their album Dream Cave, making it their fourth SMAC win.
Ethereal singer and songwriter Sarah Blasko was awarded Best Live Act and quirky, boutique festival Secret Garden was voted as Best Music Event. Civil engineer turned installation artist Mike Hewson was named Best Artist. Writer, director and performer Nick Coyle took out Best On Stage while burger joint Mary’s got Best Eats.
The prestigious award for SMAC Of The Year went to curator, community-builder and taste-maker Lisa Havilah. She was acknowledged for her role in the transformation of Campbelltown Arts Centre into a hub of Sydney’s art scene and for her work as Director of Carriageworks, having quadrupled visitors to the site since she took up the post.
The award ceremony was broadcasted live last night, direct from Carriageworks and hosted by local writer, comic and SMAC winner Nick Coyle. The awards also featured live performances from Gang of Youths, Thundamentals and Brendan Maclean.
