A sea of tributes have flown in this morning as news of music legend Prince‘s untimely passing ricocheted across the globe.
Prince was found unresponsive in an elevator at his Paisley Park home studio complex in Minnesota, and was shortly after pronounced dead at just 57 years of age.
Reactions to the news has been a mixture of profound sadness and utter disbelief, as the music community and the world at large come to terms with loosing an enduring and boundlessly influential creative icon.
Everyone from Questlove to Lorde, Justin Timberlake, Frank Ocean and CHVRCHES, to NASA and President Obama have emotionally shared their thoughts on the High Priest of Pop and the impact he made on their music, lives and history.
Writes President Obama: “‘A strong spirit transcends rules’, Prince once said — and nobody’s spirit was stronger, bolder, or more creative.”
“My friend is gone…This is what it sounds like, when doves cry. He was my dove,” writes an emotional Stevie Nicks.
“It would be silly to say that he has inspired our music,” adds Justin Timberlake. “It’s beyond that. He’s somewhere within every song I’ve ever written. I am sad, but I will smile when I think of every second that I had the fortune of being in his company. We have lost our greatest living musician. But his music will never die. Prince, NOTHING COMPARES.”
“A vanguard and genius by every metric I know of who affected many in a way that will outrun oblivion for a long while,” writes Frank Ocean. “I’m proud to be a Prince fan(stan) for life.”
