Prepare for a collaboration made in pop-punk heaven, because Blink-182‘s Mark Hoppus and All Time Low‘s Alex Gaskarth have just unleashed the first fruits of their dream team-up.
Dubbed ‘Drug’, the maiden offering from their Simple Creatures project is an infectiously poppy bop with dual vocals that doesn’t sound quite like anything we’ve heard from either dude before.
“‘Drug’ is always the first song we play people when introducing them to Simple Creatures, so it only makes sense that it’s the first single,” Hoppus explains.
“I love the ratty guitar lead mixed with the thumping kick drum. Lyrically, the song is about being destroyed by the things you love.”
The longtime m8s teamed up to co-write the tune with their producer chum Zakk Cervini (Blink-182, Yungblud, All Time Low, 5SOS) while Blink and ATW were between albums, and Gaskarth reckons they set out intending to create something that sounded “different”.
“In the studio it felt immediately like it was the song that best defined Simple Creatures,” he explains. “It’s gritty, grimy, rooted in the musicality we both came up on, but with a twist that takes it away from anything we’ve worked on before.”
Take it for a spin below and see what you reckon.
